Sarawak’s agriculture sector gets a boost with focus on food security

KUCHING, 11 Nov: The Sarawak government is stepping up its efforts to ensure food security with significant allocations to agriculture in the 2025 budget.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced a RM50 million allocation for the Tanjung Purun Paddy Scheme, aimed at increasing local rice production to reduce the state’s dependency on imports.

Currently, Sarawak only produces 32% of its rice needs, leading to imports of over 153,000 metric tonnes annually.

The government’s goal is to achieve 100% self-sufficiency in rice production through infrastructure improvements, modern farming practices, and the introduction of high-yield crops.

“We must transform our agriculture sector to secure our food supply for future generations,” said the Premier.

The budget also allocates RM20.9 million for aquaculture projects, with a focus on shrimp and inland fish farming.

These initiatives are expected to create jobs, boost exports, and support smallholder farmers. Additional funding of RM41.6 million will go towards developing farm infrastructure, such as roads and irrigation systems.

To support small farmers, RM30.4 million has been set aside for training programs, mechanization, and financial assistance.

The state government remains committed to enhancing the livelihoods of rural farmers by promoting commercial agriculture and providing access to new markets. – TVS
