KUCHING, 11 Nov: As part of its ongoing commitment to digital transformation, Sarawak will invest RM397 million in 2025 to enhance digital connectivity in rural areas.
According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, this initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to build a technology-driven economy, ensuring that all communities benefit from the digital revolution.
He said, the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Telecommunication (SMART) project is at the forefront of these efforts, with plans to complete the construction of 600 telecommunication towers by the end of next year.
This infrastructure is expected to significantly improve internet access, particularly in remote areas that have long been underserved.
He explained, improving digital infrastructure is crucial for Sarawak’s economic diversification strategy.
“We are focusing on bridging the digital divide to ensure equitable access to technology for all Sarawakians,” he said.
In addition, RM93 million will be allocated to the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) to provide affordable high-speed internet services to rural households.
These investments in digital infrastructure are expected to spur growth in the local economy by supporting small businesses and encouraging entrepreneurship.
The state also plans to invest in digital literacy programs to empower residents with the skills needed to thrive in a digital economy.
Beyond infrastructure, the budget includes RM73 million for expanding MySRBN’s reach and RM20 million in subsidies for broadband access, particularly targeting low-income families.
These initiatives aim to make Sarawak a leader in digital connectivity within Malaysia. – TVS
