KUCHING, 11 Nov: With a clear focus on bridging the urban-rural divide, Sarawak’s 2025 budget has allocated RM6.8 billion, nearly 62% of its RM10.9 billion development budget, for rural development projects.
The state government is committed to ensuring that no community is left behind as Sarawak continues on its path toward equitable growth and prosperity.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted that these funds will be directed toward critical infrastructure projects, including road construction, bridges, and water supply systems.
Among the major projects is the Northern Coastal Highway, which is expected to boost connectivity and spur economic activity in rural areas.
“We are committed to ensuring that rural communities enjoy the same level of development as their urban counterparts,” he said.
In addition to roads and bridges, water and electricity supply remain top priorities.
The budget earmarks RM352 million for expanding water supply coverage, particularly in underserved areas like Serian and Mukah.
Complementary efforts include RM452 million for enhancing electricity coverage, aiming to achieve 100% electrification in rural areas.
The allocation also includes substantial funding for community projects under the Projek Rakyat initiative, with RM650 million set aside to improve the socio-economic conditions in remote regions.
These projects are expected to generate significant job opportunities for local communities, particularly in the construction and service sectors.
Public investments will be further bolstered by allocations of RM300 million through regional development agencies, which focus on infrastructure development in remote areas.
The government is confident that these investments will help close the socio-economic gaps between rural and urban populations. – TVS
