SINGAPORE, Sept 9: Sarawak is positioning itself as a global leader in the green hydrogen market, expanding its vision beyond ASEAN to capture market share in the Asia-Pacific region.
According to the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, among the steps taken to achieve the target is by continuously advancing its clean energy strategy through technology exploration like Hybrid Solar-Wind and Solar-Hydro projects.
“These innovations complement our hydropower expansion and are pivotal in reducing carbon emissions across various sectors.
“Together with our renewable energy initiatives, these hybrid solutions underscore our unwavering commitment to sustainable energy development and a low-carbon future,” he said in his keynote speech at the Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference (APPEC) 2024 here on Friday.
He further said that Sarawak is also accelerating its path to become ASEAN’s green energy powerhouse, with goals set to double its electricity capacity to 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and further expanding to 15GW by 2035.
“Sarawak is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to a low-carbon economy. We’ve invested in green technologies, expanding hydropower, solar energy, and diversifying our energy mix with renewables.
“Hydropower is key to our transition, providing clean energy for our development. We are also expanding into solar and exploring wind potential along our coasts,” he added.
These, Abang Johari said, are aimed at positioning Sarawak as a green energy powerhouse in ASEAN through global partnerships and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven research to optimize energy production and distribution, driving the Green Economy forward. – TVS
