Film industry goes beyond entertainment

KUCHING, July 7: The film industry continues to be a major driver of economic growth for the state, making significant contributions across various aspects.

The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) Chairman Dato Kamil Othman said the industry not only entertains audiences with captivating stories but also plays a vital role in boosting the state’s economy.

As such, the economic influence of the film industry goes beyond entertainment and stimulate several sectors such as creating job opportunities, supports local businesses and attracts tourists.

Through film production and distribution, the industry generates employment for actors, directors, technicians, and other professionals, benefiting local businesses.

“FINAS is aware that this industry serves as an economic engine and not merely for entertainment, hence, making a movie or tv series will open up job opportunities.

“Furthermore, UNIMAS is heading towards the right path and this industry is not just one discipline but more especially in film making,” he said when officiating the 19th mini film festival and arts festival workshop titled “One Step Closer” here today.

He added that in a commitment to support aspiring individuals passionate about the film industry, special funds would be allocated by FINAS.

It is an initiative aimed at providing necessary support to those seeking to enhance their skills and pursue opportunities to flourish in the film industry.

“The funds are still in the proposal stage and will be adjusted accordingly.

“We want to see how this fund can be used to encourage more people to make short films or documentaries, as for us this is the first step before making a feature film,” he pointed out.
