KUALA LUMPUR, JANUARY 1: The six-day Palestine Solidarity picket near the United States (U.S) embassy in Kuala Lumpur concluded peacefully on New Year’s Eve.
Despite police taking statements from the organiser for investigation under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, the event proceeded smoothly.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said once investigation papers are completed with the statements.
“It will be handed over to the Deputy Prosecutor for further action,” he said in a statement.
Activities included speeches, music, and displays highlighting Israel’s oppression of Palestinians.
Over 200 attendees, including notable figures like former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Minister of Agriculture and Food Securities, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and social activist, Tian Chua.
Ministers emphasized Malaysia’s commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights, with more than 21,822 Palestinians reported killed by the Israel Defence Force as of December 31.
Mohamad in his speech said he believes that despite the suffering faced by Palestinians, humanity and unity are essential pillars to achieve peace.
“In Malaysia, although we are all different races and religions, we can live in peace and harmony,” he said.
Nik Nazmi, on the other hand, said that the government’s continuous efforts to voice the rights and issues of oppression against the Palestinian people in Gaza have gained the attention of the global community.
“We want to send a clear message that people worldwide, including Malaysia, will not remain silent as long as the rights of the Palestinian people are not respected,” he noted.
A total of 48 Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) took part in the peaceful protest from various walks of life including Viva Palestina Malaysia, Yayasan Al-Quds Malaysia, Suara Rakyat Malaysia and Malaysian Women’s coalition for Al-Quds and Palestine. – TVS
