KUCHING, Dec 18: Consumers seeking clarity on products to boycott in solidarity with Palestine can now use the ‘No Thanks’ app.
The app utilises an algorithm to scan product barcodes and cross-reference them with a predefined list of brands subject to boycott.
Developed by Ahmed Bashbash, a Palestinian based in Budapest, this initiative aims to assist consumers in making informed choices aligned with their support for the Palestinian cause.
“The app is very simple to use and only requires the consumer to scan the barcode using their phone’s camera.
“Once the scan is completed, the app will either tell you the product is in the boycott list or not and the consumer will have a choice whether to buy or skip the product,” said Ahmed in an interview with an international news network.
‘No Thanks’, launched on November 31st, has gained popularity with over 190,000 downloads on the Google Play Store.
Bashbash, was inspired to develop the app after the tragic loss of his brother and sister in Gaza due to an Israeli airstrike.
“When I was developing the app, it occurred to me that I have to make something for my country and for my family.
“Although this app will not erase the sufferings of my people in Palestine, but at least I want not just myself but the people who are standing with Palestine will have the knowledge to boycott products that helps fund the genocide in my homeland,” added Ahmed.
The demand for ‘No Thanks’ is growing, prompting the development of an iOS version.
Bashbash aspires to extend the app’s impact, preventing funds from supporting the occupying forces of Israel and encouraging more users to make informed choices aligned with their support for Palestine. – TVS
