Game on : Sarawak to prep e-Sports champions

KUCHING, May 25: The e-sport industry is growing exponentially and has already built a large, global audience.

State Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said Sarawak supports the development and growth of the e-sport industry in the state, apart from producing world class athletes.

As such, Sarawak had already established the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for E-sport, to nurture and groom the local e-sport talents to represent the state at the world class level.

“The objective of e-sport competition is to promote e-sports development at the grassroots level and transform into a more competitive training platform,” he told the August House today.

He said his ministry – together with Sarawak E-sports Association (SESA) – is actively supporting e-sport development platform by organising more e-sports competition and programmes.

Among the programmes include the MYSS Youth Stay At Home X-Tive Challenge and MYSS Malaysia Day E-sports Cup, with over 2,500 participants throughout Sarawak.

“Through this program recently we have nurtured our very own talents representing the states at the world class level,” he added.

Karim said that at the recent Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, Malaysia has contributed three bronze medals in the e-sport event, with Sarawakian e-sports players Ibnu Qaldoon Bin Mohamad Sukor, Alvin Lim Ming Siang and Mohamad Nabil Bin Nazaruddin representing the national contingent.- TVS
