UPDATE: Excavator body recovered less than 24 hours

BAU, SEPTEMBER 14: The body of an excavator driver who was buried under huge boulders at a quarry along Jalan Tanjung Durian, Siniawan has been recovered less than 24 hours after the accident happened.

The Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, led by the Bau Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) Chief, Tawang Lingem was initiated around 3.18pm yesterday and concluded at noon today.

Upon recovery, Anthony ak Kan-na, 49 years old, was pronounced dead by the paramedics summoned at the scene.

Tawang pointed that the deceased body has been handed to the police and transferred to the Bau Hospital Mortuary for further action.

On Sunday, the quarry’s operating company conducted a bombing activity which compromised the rock structure.

The deceased conducted levelling works at the bombing site yesterday afternoon when a 20 meter boulder crashed on him and the heavy machinery he was operating.

Rescue efforts were halted twice yesterday due to a heavy downpour and safety concerns as the day turns dark.

Other agencies involved in the rescue operations are the police force, Sarawak geoscience and mineral department, workers health and safety department, land and survey department and the several quarry staffs.
