KUCHING, May 8: The Sarawak government’s plan to build a new international airport in Kuching has gained fresh momentum following Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s official visit to Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
During the site visit, Abang Johari expressed admiration for the airport’s eco-friendly architectural design and state-of-the-art passenger management systems, which have earned it recognition as one of the best airports globally.
“The level of service is very impressive — very good services tailored to the needs of passengers.
“This visit is part of our effort to observe the architectural design and passenger management systems, including aspects such as documentation, immigration, and baggage handling operations.
“These are lessons we can apply to our own proposed airport,” he said after visiting Zayed International Airport.
The Premier noted that the green building design, which is listed on global sustainability indices, serves as a key source of inspiration.
He further emphasized the importance of combining modern infrastructure with Sarawak’s distinct cultural identity.
“We aim to incorporate our cultural motifs while ensuring the latest technological standards are met,” he said.
Abang Johari also revealed that the Sarawak government is exploring public-private partnership (PPP) models, similar to those employed in Abu Dhabi’s port and airport developments, to drive the airport project forward.
“We are looking for the best model to develop both our port and our airport,” he said.
“As Sarawak is still in the early stages of development, we are taking into account the best practices available in the market,” he added.
The visit to Abu Dhabi marks an early step in a series of exploratory missions aimed at supporting the strategic development of Kuching’s new airport, envisioned as a major aviation hub connecting Sarawak to key regional destinations.- TVS
