Pfizer: FDA-Approved & Rebranded

ByTVS

As the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially approves their vaccine, Pfizer is now renaming their well-known Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine to Comirnaty (pronounced koe-mir-na-tee).

What’s behind the name one may ask? Quoting Pfizer, Comirnaty is a mash up of four words: Covid-19, mRNA, community and immunity.

Pfizer stated that among the rejected names were Covuity, Rnaxcovi, Kovimerna and RNXtract.

Comirnaty is now the first COVID-19 vaccine to receive the FDA’s approval. While many have safely received the vaccine, FDA’s approval of the vaccine, and many more to come, may instill additional confidence to those who have not been vaccinated.

While likeliness of the new name replacing the original term in daily speech seems bleak, as the internet reacts by making jokes on the new name, there might be a slight chance that Comirnaty is here to stay.
