KUCHING, Feb 21: State flags will be flown at half-mast starting today and tomorrow (Feb 22) as a solemn tribute for the passing of former Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
This comes as the State Government declared two days of mourning period for the longest-serving Chief Minister.
The Sarawak Public Communication Unit in a statement said all official functions involving entertainment would also be postponed.
“The state government extends its condolences to the family of the late allahyarham Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
“Mosques and houses of worship are encouraged to hold prayer services for Abdul Taib,” the statement read.
A state funeral would be held for Taib at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly complex on Thursday, and members of the public can pay their last respects from 8 AM to 11.30 AM.
He will then be laid to rest at the family burial ground in Demak Jaya after prayers at Masjid Demak.
Tun Taib took his final breath at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur at 4:40 AM on Wednesday.
His remains is expected to arrive at Kuching International Airport around 3:30 PM later this afternoon. – TVS
