KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5: As Starbucks marks its 25th anniversary in Malaysia, it remains more than just a coffee house, actively contributing to positive change and empowering diverse communities.
The success is credited to over 5000 all-Malaysian partners, who contribute to Starbucks Malaysia’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
The company prioritises partner development through tailored training programs, earning recognition with multiple ‘Employer of Choice’ awards for fostering a supportive work environment.
Berjaya Food Group CEO and Managing Director of Berjaya Starbucks Dato’ Sydney Quays said the company deeply rooted in its values, the brand is committed to giving back to the very community that has played an invaluable role in its remarkable growth, as they honour 25 years of shared moments together.
“Starbucks is proud to be an integral part of Malaysia, and aspires to continue fostering meaningful connections with everyone in the local community for many years to come.
“Embodying this commitment, the ethos of Starbucks Malaysia’s 25th anniversary is encapsulated in the spirit of ‘Brewing Memories, Engaging Communities,’ where every sip and conversation contributes to the shared experiences within the local community,” he added.
Quays also pointed out each day, Starbucks remains steadfast in fulfilling its mission, “With every cup, with every conversation, with every community – we nurture the limitless possibilities of human connection” – reflecting the true essence of their journey in Malaysia and the world.
“I am also grateful to our local business partners and friends of the media for their contribution to our growth in Malaysia,” he said in a statement.
“And most of all, I am eternally thankful to Malaysians for allowing us to create meaningful connections with them, from our very beginnings and for many years to come.”
In 2016, Starbucks Malaysia embarked on a mission to nurture a more inclusive and compassionate community. This resulted in the world’s first Starbucks Signing Store, located in Bangsar Village II.
The success of this initiative led to the opening of Signing Stores in Penang and Kuching, employing and empowering more Deaf partners.
The brand also provides a platform for the Deaf community to showcase their talents, adorning some stores with artwork by Deaf artists like Lim Anuar and Madang Ding Anyi.
In 2019, Starbucks Malaysia launched the Starbucks Upcycled Flavorlock™ Pouch program, an initiative that upcycles used Flavorlock Whole Bean coffee bags. These upcycled pouches, created by young girls and women of YWCA KL, reaffirm Starbucks’ commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and environmental impact.
For every pouch purchased, RM1 is dedicated to supporting the YWCA KL’s Vocational Training Opportunity Centre (VTOC), empowering young girls and women from B40 communities through tailored curriculums.
Starbucks Malaysia also takes steps in corporate social responsibility by partnering with NGOs such as What a Waste (WaW) to eradicate food insecurity among low-income families, with a sum of over RM230,000 being granted to support this cause.
To commemorate its 25 year anniversary, Starbucks Malaysia is unveiling a special collection featuring anticipated food and beverages, 2024 planners, drinkware, Starbucks card, and a life-sized ‘Bearista’ plushie. – TVS
