Crafting a Digital Presence, Promoting Craftsmanship Online

ByLorenzo Isaac Ak Anthony

KUCHING, 14 Nov: Elevating her artisanal craft, Lydia Usun Boy passionately utilises social media platforms to showcase intricately designed products.

Inspired by her mother’s craft-making heritage in Baram, Lydia Usun Boy entered entrepreneurship, establishing Inland Reken Enterprise. Beyond sourcing local materials like rattan, she empowers her community by showcasing and selling their handcrafted goods through platforms like Facebook and TikTok.

“Prices for my crafted items are accessible, with smaller pieces starting at RM15. Bulk purchases can even lower the price to around RM13 per item.

“For larger, more intricate pieces like mats, prices can reach RM350 or more, while the labor-intensive items like rattan mats may go up to RM500,” she told TVS reporter during the Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) Expo 2023 held at Plaza Merdeka, here today.

Driven by her authentic passion for crafting, she transitioned from a lecturing profession to fully immerse herself in the craft business.

This practical decision was facilitated by her urban residence, providing convenient access to essential materials for her creative pursuits.

“If we rely solely on a job, be it in the private or government sector, the uncertainty of the future becomes apparent. Establishing a side income is crucial as it offers financial stability that knows no time constraints, making it more lucrative.

“Once we start being interested, we have to try. Don’t give up. Don’t be afraid of failure. If you fail, do it again. The more we fail, the more experience we gain,” stressed Lydia.

According to Lydia, prior to her resignation, she had already secured a shop in the heart of Miri, actively seeking a suitable location for a handicraft store.

“Before resigning, I had already rented a shop, looking for a handicraft shop in the center of Miri. I thought we could cover the rent. From there, I was confident. When I saw its income, I was very much surprised,” she added.

For those interested in Lydia’s craftwork, placing orders is easy – visit her Facebook page Reken or get in touch with her directly at 013-8626004.
