Addressing a looming talent gap with new partnerships

KUCHING, Nov 8: Sarawak is in need of qualified trainers in the fast-evolving semiconductor and chip design industry.

Hence, Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD), in collaboration with Melexis NV and Synopsis International are facilitating the state government through the train-the-trainer programme.

Deputy Minister For Education, Innovation And Talent Development II Datuk Francis Harden Hollis stated that the programme is a significant initiative with its goal to nurture local talents and build a robust ecosystem in the semiconductor industry.

“The training modules, meticulously crafted by Melexis and Synopsys in consultation with SMD, ensure that the programme remains aligned with the swiftly evolving semiconductor landscape.

“With these experts, they will bring real-world experience, industry insights, and the latest technological advancements into the training program,” he told reporters during the Pre-Event Press Conference of Train-The-Trainers: Talent Development in Semiconductors and Chip Design at a hotel in Kuching on Wednesday.

Harden noted that the training modules cover a wide range of topics tailored to Analog IC Design, Analog IC Layout, and IC testing, which are essential in meeting the industry’s needs and contibutes effectively to the industry.

In addressing the overall programme, four courses will be offered namely: Analog Integrated Circuit (IC) Design, Analog IC Layout, IC Testing, and Wafer Fabrication which aims to produce 500 professionals by 2030.

“SMD will be working with Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) and Sarawak Skills, and connect Sarawak’s institution with professionals and experts from around the world.

“Graduates will have the opportunity to fill high-value vacancies, which means a guaranteed job placement in the semiconductor industry” he said. -TVS
