KUCHING, Aug 15: The potential for extending the success of the What About Kuching (WAK) Festival to other regions of Sarawak has garnered attention.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said given the demonstrated success of previous editions of WAK while, the festival also presents a valuable platform for nurturing and showcasing the talents of Sarawak’s youth.
“Through What About Kuching, we can showcase and see that many of our youth have various talents.
“They just need a platform to showcase it,” said Abdul Karim during the launch of the What About Kuching Festival 2023 at the Baitul Makmur building on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, WAK Festival’s Director, Donald Tan expressed his vision for this year’s event, emphasising collaborations with neighbouring countries to enhance regional and international cooperation, thereby elevating local standards for talents and organizers.
“All related governmental agencies should rally behind WAK, providing safe and secure platforms for our creatives to showcase their talents. While, encouraging these entities to fully embrace WAK, transforming Kuching into a vibrant hub of arts, culture, and exciting lifestyle,” he stressed.
In a significant achievement, WAK 2022 played a crucial role in contributing over RM34 million to Sarawak’s economy.
The festival welcomed around 331,687 visitors from within Kuching, across the region, and even internationally, further cementing its significance. – TVS
