National Veteran Hero’s Legacy Must Inspire Future Generations

ByCheryl Syahmina Toh

KUCHING, August 9: Unsung heroes have laid down their lives in the pursuit of peace and independence, their sacrifices serving as a foundation for today’s way of life.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian stressed these heroic narratives are essential for the youth of tomorrow to comprehend.

“The stories of their heroism should be transmitted to the younger generations, ensuring that the youth grasp the sacrifices made in nation building,” he said after paying his last respect to the late Major (Retired) Michael Riman Bugat, Former Sarawak Ranger, at the Kuching Civic Centre on Wednesday.

Dr. Sim extended his condolences to the family of the honorable warrior, who passed away at 71, lauding his patriotism.

“I express gratitude for the presence of the veterans who supported us. On July 22, he stood among respected veterans during Sarawak’s 60th Year of Independence celebration at Padang Merdeka, even in his retirement.

“We’ve lost a Sarawak hero who contributed to our legacy,” added Dr. Sim.

Meanwhile, Lance Corporal Beliang Bali, a former ranger of the “Ngelaban” Platoon within the 8th Battalion Ranger Regiment, described the departed national fighter as a man of action.

“We served together in the same platoon from our early days as recruits, watching the regiment expand from 31 to 503 rangers.

“Wherever I went, we stood together in defense. He was known for his valor and few words,” he pointed out.

The nation grieves the loss of a national icon, Major (Retired) Michael Riman Bugat, who passed away on Monday morning (August 7) at the age of 71 in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

He was honoured with the Panglima Gagah Berani Medal by Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Iskandar, on June 6, 1984, for his bravery in a conflict with communist terrorists in Sarawak.

Riman’s final journey will take place tomorrow (August 10) at Heroes’ Memorial Park, Jalan Taman Budaya, at 10 am. -TVS
