Prince Harry and Meghan, Britain’s Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcomed a new baby girl on Friday.
Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor is named after two regal women: Queen Elizabeth II and Harry’s late mother Princess Diana.
She was born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, with Harry in attendance.
The couple released a statement announcing the news, saying (quote):
“On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe.”
Meghan announced she was expecting a girl in March during an explosive U.S. television interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The actress accused the royal family of racism and said she had felt suicidal in the early days of her marriage.
That interview threw the family into crisis, deepening a rift between Harry and his brother, Prince William, and with Harry’s father, heir-to-the throne Prince Charles.
The couple’s first, Archie, was born in 2019.
Their press secretary said both mother and baby were doing well and were back at home.
