ByCheryl Syahmina Toh

KUCHING, 20 April: After three years of silence, long-awaited Pesta Kaul Mukah is set to return on a grand scale this coming April 29.

The four-day event, which officially starts on April 26, will see waves of international visitors and locals from all walks of communities as all gathering activities are on a hiatus since 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic.

“Pesta Kaul Mukah is finally making its comeback after three years, with a variety of activities embracing the significance of the culture and traditions of the Melanau community, to promote our local heritage to visitors.

“The Kaul festival actually had already symbolised its start with the ‘Kaul Seraheng Kakan’ ceremony held last month at Tapak Pesta Kaul Mukah, Pantai Kala Dana, but for the official ceremony, we would have to organise it after the month of Ramadhan,” said Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Muhammad Leo Toyad Abdullah, who led the Induk Kaul Mukah organising committee in a courtesy call to the Premier of Sarawak at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Kuching on Thursday.

He also added that this year, the committee had received 68 registrations of stalls for the festival, a bigger number compared to the its previous event.

Dr. Toyad also highlighted that more activities will be on its line up this year, with an addition of competitions and cultural exhibits.

“For the event this year, the committee will be introducing more youth-centric activities to educate our younger generation in appreciating traditions.

“Among them, we will feature , a cultural ladies competition, homegrown market and immersive traditional performances,” he added.

The organising chariman also called for more locals to the event.

“The festival is open for all, so mark your calendar on the weekend for this activity-filled festivity to promote our local tourism,” he said.

Meanwhile , Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, is expected to officially launch the opening ceremony this coming April 29. Also present at the courtesy visit was Induk Kaul Mukah 2023 Deputy Chairman, Abdul Yakub Arbi and Royston Valentine along with the Federation of the Melanau Association Sarawak (PPMS) delegates. -TVS
