KUCHING, 17 Apr: The Kenyalang Film Festival seeks remarkable young and budding filmmakers and diverse, engaging and appealing short films and documentaries highlighting Sarawak or Borneo.
The inaugural event, set to take place on May 8 to 9, is aimed at inspiring and empowering young film talents in Borneo and fostering creative collaborations between the media industry and local communities.
Hosted by Curtin University Malaysia and supported by TVS, the Kenyalang Film Festival provides a platform for young filmmakers to meet experienced filmmakers for mentorship and funding opportunities.
“The idea behind the Kenyalang Film Festival is to enhance the representation of Borneo in films and the media, and get Bornean people who are of diverse ethnicity more engaged in screen culture.
“It will be a great platform for them to develop themselves and the film industry in Borneo as a whole,” said Curtin University Malaysia Department of Media and Communication Head, Dr. Ngu Ik Ying.
Comprising two categories, the contest is open to secondary school or tertiary students category, and an open category for aspiring filmmakers in the public.
Participation is free of charge and international students or foreigners living in Malaysia are also encouraged to participate in the festival.
Organised by Curtin Bachelor of Communications students, the festival is sponsored by an engineering company, Wehaya Sdn Bhd.
