KUCHING, 14 Nov: A man was arrested in connection with offences related to the 15th general election (GE15) on Saturday.
Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said police has opened an investigation for the case on the alleged conduct of destroying political parties and candidates’ banners and billboards.
“Police received a distress call at 2.30am from an Election Commission (EC) enforcement officer regarding the act of two male suspects of allegedly destroying campaign election banners and posters along Jalan Kampung Boyan.
“A team from the ‘Op Cantas’ were deployed and managed to detained a 37-year-old male suspect in Petra Jaya while the other is still at large,” he said in a statement.
Initial report revealed that the suspect has had three prior criminal record of drug-related offences.
The case has been classified under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and causing loss or damage.
The offence carries a jail term of one to five years or a fine or both upon conviction.
“The police would like to remind everyone to refrain from acts of provocation that could disrupt the democratic process of the country under the Elections Act 1958, Election Offences Act 1954 and Elections Regulation 1981,” Ahsmon noted. – TVS
