IRAN, Oct 17: The death toll of Tehran’s Evin prison stands at eight, following the aftermath of the massive fire on Saturday.
The four latest imates who were in critical condition succumbed to their injuries today (Oct 17).
All eight deceased were imprisoned for theft-related crimes. While, 61 others were injured.
The incident has also taken the interest of many locals, in support of the inmates while shouting ‘Death to Khamenei’, which refers to their supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The prison holds many Iran political and dual-national detainees, which have been blacklisted by the united states government in 2018 for serious human rights abuses.
Currently, the prison has achieved order, though smoke continues to appear from the complex as firefighters are still putting out the fire caused by several explosions heard from the prison.
Tehran prison has come under fire, for using threats of torture as a means to gather intel from inmates, according to Human Rights Watch.
They were also denied any medical attention. -TVS
