KUCHING, Oct 13: Sarawak mulls to monetise its carbon resources as part of its green carbon economics as well as in fulfilling the nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Deputy Premier of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian pointed out that Sarawak has an advantage in fulfilling such goals namely through its green carbon and blue carbon.
“In Sarawak, we have 1.6 million hectares of green carbon and 15 million hectares of blue carbon, these are two very powerful things on our SDG target.
“In West Malaysia, it is not obtainable to get a total of 6 million hectares of green carbon, we (Sarawak) are happy to let you have the 6 million hectares, but someone has to pay for it. And that’s why we are looking at it as another economic or the new economic of this green carbon or new economic of blue carbon,” he said in his speech when officiating the launching ceremony of MURNInets at a hotel here, today.
As such, Dr. Sim stressed that these two green economics are able to contribute to a robust economy statewide.
Meanwhile, a total of 26 PBTs in Sarawak has joined the Malaysia Urban Rural National Indicators Network for Sustainable Development (MURNInets) starting next year.
During the ceremony, Minister of Local Government and Housing Sarawak Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian lauded the move, stating that this is a definite state for Sarawak to adapt to digital transformation.
“The launch of MURNInets itself is a step forward as this allows for the achievement set by the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg into becoming a high-income state by 2030 and society driven by data and innovation,”
Dr. Sim said data has enabled Sarawakians to thrive by citing an example through virtual meetings.
“Through the efficient virtual meetings held by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), we have given accurate data and coordinated sustainable service delivery to the people during the lockdown,” added Dr. Sim.
Dr. Sim further stressed that such a programme will potentially help Sarawak achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2030) and achieve Liveable Cities And Towns Status under the United Nations Sustainable Development Action. – TVS
