KUALA LUMPUR, June 24: A drawn out Iran-Israel conflict could potentially adversely impact Malaysia’s tourism sector, according to the Malaysian Association of Tourism Agencies (MATA).
MATA President Dato’s Sri Mohd Khalid Harun said the conflict could result in rising global oil prices, which could lead to more expensive airfares and increased tourism operation costs.
“In addition, there is a risk of rising cancellations of travel packages to the region due to safety concerns and market uncertainties,” he said in a statement today.
In this regard, MATA calls on all industry players to be more prepared for any eventualities, including reviewing their marketing plans and adjusting package pricing strategies accordingly.
“Flexibility and resilience within Malaysia’s tourism industry are vital in
facing the current geopolitical challenges.
“MATA will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) and related agencies to ensure the sustainability and competitiveness of Malaysia’s tourism sector,” he added.
MATA also encourages its members and industry players to consider shifting their focus to more stable ASEAN and Asian markets to reduce dependence on the turbulent Middle Eastern market.
Meanwhile, MATA will also seek clarification from MOTAC on contingencies and strategies should the conflict be prolonged and lead to long-term disruptions in inbound and outbound tourism flows. – TVS
