KUCHING, May 31: The Sarawak government’s commitment to balanced growth is reflected in its increased allocation for rural development under the 2025 State Budget, part of ongoing efforts to bridge the rural-urban divide and ensure equitable growth.
In his Gawai Dayak 2025 message, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said RM6.8 billion has been earmarked for rural development in 2025, up from RM5.695 billion the previous year.
He said the increase reflects the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s firm resolve to enhance the quality of life residing in rural areas.
“Our Premier is a leader for all, regardless of race and religion. His policy of inclusivity, as enshrined in the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, ensures that no individual, including the Dayak community, will be left behind in Sarawak’s journey toward progress,” he said.
Uggah, who is also the state’s Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, said the focus on rural development has translated into key infrastructure projects aimed at spurring regional growth.
“Five bridges have already been completed, including the Batang Saribas 1 Bridge in Pusa, Betong and others such as the iconic Bintulu Jepak, Muara Lassa, Marudi and Batang Rajang bridges.
“Six more, including the nation’s longest river bridge , Batang Lupar 1, are expected to be completed by year-end,” he added.
Meanwhile, Uggah also called for the festival to be embraced as a celebration of unity, harmony and cultural richness, particularly in a multi-ethnic state like Sarawak.
“Just as bridges connect our cities and villages, this Gawai season should also serve as a ‘bridge’ to strengthen the bond of friendship, unity and harmony among us all.
“Let us celebrate our diversity under the spirit of ‘Segulai Sejalai’, or Together in Unity,” he added. – TVS
