SIBU, 23 May: The WAK Sibu Festival is back this June with three packed days of performances, exhibitions, markets and more.
Running from 6 to 8 June at the Sibu Heritage Centre, this year’s festival will feature over 20 events, bringing together artists, performers and vendors from Sibu, Kuching, Kuala Lumpur and beyond.
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Deputy Chairman Cr. Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley said the festival is not just about entertainment, but about creativity, identity, and community spirit.
“This kind of exchange strengthens our cultural ecosystem and puts Sibu on the map as a regional creative hub,” he said in a statement.
The official programme of the festival’s second edition was officially launched in a press conference at Wisma Sanyan here on Thursday.
Most events are free, with only a few ticketed performances.
The festival’s highlights include a solo theatre performance by Pearlly Chuah, Music by Time Signature, an instrumental band from Kuching playing familiar Top 40 tunes, as well as DJ sets by DJ Sotong, DJ Steph, DJ APP, and DJ Losan throughout the festival grounds.
The festical will also feature art exhibitions, including Into the Wild, Celebrating Malaysia, and All About Arts: Elements of Nature, as well as a fashion show featuring works by Edric Ong and Melor by Melinda Omar, both fresh from showing at London Fashion Week.
Also returning is the Rainbow Market, now expanded with curated vendors from Kuching.
Visitors can expect food, handmade crafts, lifestyle products, and cultural performances in a lively evening setting.
According to festival manager Brendan Chin, every event is designed to be accessible, inclusive and community-drive, true to the WAK philosophy of ‘by the community, for the community.’
“We want this to be a platform where local talent can shine, while also learning and collaborating with creatives from across Sarawak and beyond,” he added.
The Sibu edition is part of the larger What About Kuching (WAK) movement and is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak.
