Australia records increase in ETA applications from Malaysian travellers – High Commissioner

KUALA LUMPUR, May 20: Australia has recorded a notable increase in Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) applications from Malaysian travellers, reflecting sustained interest in visiting the country, said Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia Danielle Heinecke.

She said the applications for ETA rose from 128,000 in 2024 to 157,000 this year, underscoring strong travel demand.

“The average processing time is typically under five days, but in December, it was just one day. So, it does depend a little on when people apply,” she told Bernama.

The ETA is a short-term visa that enables eligible foreign nationals, including Malaysians, to enter Australia for tourism or business visitor purposes without the need for a traditional visa.

Heinecke also encouraged frequent travellers to consider the Visitor visa (subclass 600), which was introduced in March last year and made available from mid-2024. The visa, which is valid for five years, is tailored for individuals with ongoing ties to Australia.

“Those involved in research collaboration, owning rental property, or regularly attending conferences in Australia may apply for the five-year business visa. While it can also be used for tourism, the first entry must be for a business-related purpose,” she explained.

The initiative forms part of Australia’s broader efforts to enhance two-way business engagement with Malaysia and facilitate mobility for professionals who travel regularly.

Additionally, a 10-year visa option is now available for travellers seeking longer-term flexibility, although it comes with a higher application fee.

Responding to concerns from some Malaysian applicants about increased stringency in the visa process, Heinecke clarified that there have been no changes to visa policy over the past 12 months.

However, she acknowledged that certain aspects of the process may be unclear and said efforts are underway to address this.

“We are working to gather feedback on areas of the process that may be unclear, and we are currently producing a video specifically for Malaysians to help clarify the requirements and minimise confusion,” she said. – TVS
