KUCHING, Mar 27: In a historic moment of remembrance and gratitude, Kuching for the first time hosted a re-enactment of Operation Semut, a covert World War II mission that eternally forged the bond between Sarawak and Australia.
Australian Defence Advisor Colonel Corey Shillabeer emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made and ensuring the legacy of Operation Semut lives on.
“It’s a remarkable story, and I think the Premier of Sarawak wants to share it with the Sarawakian community.
“Today marks the beginning of conversations to ensure we never forget the sacrifices made and the partnership that Malaysia and Australia have shared for many years,” he told TVS during the 80th commemoration of Operation Semut Parachute Landing 1945 at Padang Merdeka here today.
Officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the commemoration serves as a tribute to the bravery of the Australian Z Special Unit and Sarawak’s indigenous warriors whose sacrifices helped liberate the region from Japanese occupation in 1945.
Colonel Shillabeer acknowledged the powerful significance of the display, underscoring Sarawak’s role in maintaining peace and security in the region through its cooperation with Australia.
“At a defense level, we have been working together for over 80 years, and our partnership continues to grow stronger.
“Now that Sarawak is an independent, sovereign entity, our cooperation is even more significant. We support each other, and both nations benefit from this relationship,” he added.
The performance featured personnel from the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) and the Australia Defence Force (ADF), organised by the State Protocol and Event Management Unit (UPPAN) and other state agencies.
Four highly-skilled paratroopers from Pasukan Khas Udara (PASKAU) took part in recreating the parachute jump from 8,000 feet above ground.
The ceremony in Kuching today followed an equally heartfelt commemoration on Mar 25 in Bario, where the mission first took place 80 years ago.
The commemoration in Bario included the first ever re-enactment of the landing by the Z Special Unit paratroopers, led by Major Tom Harrisson in 1945.
Since its inception in 2013, this annual event has brought together former soldiers, families of Operation Semut and the local heroes who aided the Z Special Unit. – TVS
