UNITED STATES, March 19: After a prolonged and unexpected stay of nearly nine months aboard the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore finally made their return to Earth.
Their homecoming came after a dramatic and challenging period of waiting due to unforeseen technical problems with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft.
On Tuesday afternoon, their long-awaited return was made possible aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft alongside their fellow Crew-9 astronauts Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.

The gumdrop-shaped capsule, appropriately named ‘Freedom’, endured extreme conditions during its re-entry, with temperatures soaring to 2,000 degrees Celsius.
After surviving the fiery descent, the spacecraft splashed down safely into the ocean, bobbing gently on the waves beneath a clear and sunny sky.
Ground teams greeted the astronauts’ safe return with cheers, marking the end of a dramatic chapter for the crew who spent an extended period in space due to unforeseen circumstances.

Their return has been hailed as a triumph of perseverance and teamwork, with the astronauts looking forward to reuniting with their families and adjusting to life on Earth after an extraordinary and unplanned adventure beyond our planet.
The duo, initially scheduled to return in the summer of 2024, were forced to stay on the ISS when issues with the Starliner capsule delayed their mission’s return. – TVS
