KUCHING, Mar 18: Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor has successfully completed the second cohort of its Semiconductor Mastery Programme for Analog Integrated Circuit (IC) Design and IC Test Solution Development, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing local semiconductor talent.
SMD Chairman, Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar said the programme plays a crucial role in preparing young talents with specialised skills for the evolving industry.
“This programme’s success marks another significant step in equipping our young talents with the specialized skills required for the evolving demands of the industry.
“By investing in talent programmes, we are fostering a strong ecosystem that supports innovation, economic growth, and high-value job creation,” he said at the completion ceremony.
The initiative, supported by key industry players including Melexis NV, X-FAB Sarawak, and the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS), provided participants with hands-on training, mentorship, and exposure to industry best practices.
Encouraged by the success of the first two cohorts, SMD announced the launch of the third cohort in October 2025.
The upcoming programme will feature enhanced training modules, expanded industry collaborations, and specialised courses in emerging semiconductor technologies.
SMD Chief Executive Officer, Shariman Jamil said SMD remains committed to advancing semiconductor education and workforce development.
“We remain committed to developing top-tier semiconductor talent, and the third cohort will take things even further.
“Building on the success of the first two cohorts, we are bringing in more industry expertise and hands-on learning to ensure our participants are fully equipped to thrive in this fast-evolving industry,” he said.
Additionally, a new training course under the Semiconductor Mastery Programme, Digital IC Design, is set to begin in August this year, further expanding opportunities for aspiring semiconductor professionals.
With ongoing investments in talent development and industry partnerships, SMD Semiconductor aims to transform Sarawak as the silicon nerve centre of Asia. – TVS
