KUCHING, Jan 15: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today expressed his deepest gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for recognising Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) as the sole gas aggregator in Sarawak.
In a statement today, Abang Johari said the Sarawak Government appreciates the roles of the Federal Government and Petroleum Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) in resolving the issue.
“Sarawak Government and PETROS would work close with the Federal Government and PETRONAS to ensure that PETROS carries out its role as the sole gas aggregator without interruption to the supply of gas for consumers, including investors,” he said in the statement.
According to Abang Johari, the move would enhance collaboration between the Federal and Sarawak Government, including PETRONAS and PETROS.
“Such strategic collaborations will drive the efforts to make Malaysia, and Sarawak in particular into becoming an energy hub,” he added.
He also said the cooperation will enhance Malaysia’s competitiveness in attracting investments, technological research and new industries, specifically in petrochemical derivatives that would drive the creation of high-paying jobs and economic growth of the nation.
In a press conference in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, Anwar said issues related to PETRONAS and PETROS on gas distribution rights in Sarawak have been resolved through a series of negotiations, including a meeting with the Sarawak Premier.
Anwar explained that while PETROS has been granted authority as a gas aggregator, the Sarawak-based company will not interfere with PETRONAS’ existing operations. – TVS
