SINGAPORE, 21 Oct: Sarawak has achieved a major milestone in its renewable energy transition, surpassing its 2024 target by generating 62% of its energy mix from renewables, with hydropower playing a dominant role.
According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Sarawak is on track to achieve 10GW of electricity capacity by 2030, expanding to 15GW by 2035, with the majority coming from renewable sources.
“This strengthens our commitment to a sustainable and energy-secure future.
“Our hydropower achievements have allowed us to pursue new innovations, such as the development of Malaysia’s largest floating solar farm at Batang Ai. Spanning 86 hectares, this project will offset 52 kilotonnes of carbon emissions annually, further reducing our carbon footprint,” he said during his keynote address at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2024 here.
He also emphasized the role of Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) and other renewable technologies as critical drivers in Sarawak’s decarbonization journey.
Looking ahead, Sarawak is also positioning itself at the forefront of the hydrogen economy.
Abang Johari underscored the state’s commitment to becoming a global hydrogen hub, with significant investments being channeled into hydrogen production, electrolysers, and fuel cells.
“Sarawak is at the forefront of the hydrogen economy, showcasing our commitment to innovation and our vision of becoming a global leader in clean energy,” he added.
The Premier further highlighted Sarawak’s innovative use of biomass, particularly its efforts to harness Napier grass as a renewable bioenergy source.
“Napier grass pellets from a Bintulu plant are already being exported to the United Kingdom, showcasing its potential in global energy markets,” he said, emphasizing the economic opportunities offered by biomass energy.
He added, this success story drives Sarawak to explore similar opportunities, positioning biomass as a key player in its sustainable energy future and reinforcing the commitment to renewable solutions. – TVS
