MIRI, May 29: A longhouse in Kampung Long Bemang, Ulu Baram is still flooded, forcing its 558 residents to reside on the second floor of the longhouse.
As of 7.40am today, the 103-door longhouse remains under 1.7 of floodwater since it first struck on May 27.
According to reports by the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the floodwater shows no signs of receding and has potential to rise further due to cloudy weather.
Chief Kalvin Luhat of the Long Bemang Voluntary Fire Association (PBS) informed that patrols and continous monitoring are actively conducted to ensure the safety of the residents.
“So far we have no evacuated any residents yet, but the gloomy weather is a major concern,” he said.
On May 20 to May 23, the longhouse was also flooded, where floodwater recorded up to 1.8 meters in depth.
Villagers were also advised to stay alert and be prepared for possible evacuations if the situation worsens. – TVS
