KUCHING, May 28: Journalists play a crucial role in disseminating accurate information to counter fake news, thus contributing to social, economic and political development.
In regard to this, Chief Executive Officer of TVSarawak (TVS) Kushairi Abang said the celebration of the Nasional Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2024 highlights the importance of journalism in national development.
“HAWANA plays a role in unifying the journalism field, which is crucial for nation-building, and we need constructive news rather than news that damage our unity.
“This is where HAWANA can play a role in providing a positive perspective to media practitioners,” he said during a dialogue session in conjunction with HAWANA 2024 here on Monday.
On how HAWANA serves to elevate journalism as a professional career, he said with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), journalists would need to find ways to prevent the spread of fakes news due to the AI boom.
“When we talk about news reporting, with the existence of AI technology, any news disseminated may contain misinformation and reporting from various angles.
“This is where accurate or verified news is needed to uphold national unity in a diverse population,” he added. – TVS
