BANGKOK, May 17: Sarawak is at the forefront of both the hydrogen economy and the green energy revolution, as the state government remains dedicated to advancing renewable energy in the region.
Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said that the switch to renewable energy has a significant positive influence on the local economy and community in addition to the environment.
“Sarawak’s commitment to renewable hydropower has created an opportunity for us to develop bilateral relations with neighboring Southeast Asian countries in sharing renewable sources, in addition to accelerating the regional energy transition in line with the ambitions of a regional renewable energy powerhouse,” he said.
Abang Johari said this at the Future Energy Asia Conference 2024 at the Queen Sirikit International Convention Center (QSNCC) here today.
He added Sarawak hopes to lead the way in novel approaches that will boost the state’s economy and save the environment for coming generations.
“Fundamentally, hydrogen is more than simply a fuel. It is the catalyst to make Sarawak greener and more resilient.
“By introducing hydrogen, Sarawak is creating prospects for job creation, economic growth, and environmental sustainability, in addition to diversifying its energy mix.
Moreover, Abang Johari emphasised that Sarawak’s transition to a green economy is dependent on three key pillars: international collaboration, effective policies, and advancements in technology.
In the meantime, he also disclosed that his participation in the recent Central European Hydrogen Technology Forum in Poznan, Poland, has opened up valuable opportunities for Sarawak in exploring new technologies and collaboration for hydrogen and decarbonisation strategies.-TVS
