LUNDU, April 18: An elderly woman, Minu Khien, 76, is suspected to be the latest victim of a crocodile attack at Sungai Rayu near here, around 8 am today.

Accompanied by her 54-year-old daughter, she had gone to the river to look for clams.

According to Lundu district police chief DSP Damataries Lautin, the daughter, who was nearby in another area, heard her mother scream several times.

She rushed over only to find her mother gone, believed to have been attacked and snatched into the river by a crocodile.

The daughter hurried back to their village in Kampung Sungai Belian to inform other family members of the incident.

According to him, efforts are now underway to locate the victim.

“A search for the victim was then conducted by the family.

“They found traces of blood some 500 meters from the Kampung Sungai Rayu bridge,” Damataries said.

He added that the family also found the victim’s clothing some 200 meters downstream.

Given the prevalence of crocodiles in the area, it is suspected that Minu Khien fell victim to one of these reptiles.

Assisting in the search and rescue operation are the Fire and Rescue Department along with local villagers.-TVS
