KUCHING, Mar 13: Sarawak’s pint size cultural ambassador Dion Das Louis, also known as ‘Little Borneo Birdie’ is set to dazzle on the world stage at the 27th World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA 2024) in California, United States of America.
According to his father, Louis Lansam, the 8-year-old will be part of the Malaysian team at the competition which will be held from July 1st to 5th.
“He has qualified for the world championship after winning a gold medal at the grand final of the Malaysia Championship of Performing Arts held in Kuala Lumpur on January 27 recently.
“He performed an ethnic contemporary dance where he assumed the character of a little bird, thus the moniker ‘Little Borneo Birdie’ was born,” he said.
Louis said the rendition of the Ngajat is influenced by elements from two majestic Borneo birds namely the Ruai (Great Malayan Argus pheasant) and the Kenyalang or Hornbill.
Earlier, Dion accompanied by his father and mother, Edina Lanying, paid a courtesy call to Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah at his office.
In welcoming the family, Uggah said it was very heartening to note that Dion is participating in world-class championships.
“We are very happy that a youngster from our community can make it to the world stage,” he said. -TVS
