KUCHING, Feb 21: The late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud often reminded Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the importance of prioritizing the welfare of farmers and fishermen so as to ensure they are not left behind in the state’s development.
Abang Johari said that Tun Taib also advised him to always be humble while serving and to strive to improve the standard of living of the people of Sarawak.
“I still remember when I was appointed Deputy Minister of Agriculture where he asked me to always help farmers and fishermen, until the first time we held Farmers’ Day.
“We started in Samarahan and this is a very good lesson from Pehin Sri Taib Mahmud,” he told reporters during a press conference at Kuching International Airport (KIA) here, today.
Abang Johari noted that Tun Taib also often offered guidance to other ministers, including Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
“When he [Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas] wanted to be a candidate [representative of the people] but he [the late Tun Abdul Taib] said to wait first, and Datuk Amar Douglas listened to the advice.
“This is the most cherished lesson when we were still young ministers at that time,” he said.-TVS
