KUCHING, Feb 21: The former Governor and Chief Minister of Sarawak, the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud contributed greatly to Sarawak by grooming political talent for good governance, including the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, says Sarawak state legal advisor Dato Sri JC Fong.
According to him, Tun Taib was regarded as the father of modern Sarawak, who kick-started the economic, social and political transformation of the state with his “politics of development”.
“He initiated Sarawak’s transformation in the economic, social, and political realms through his politics of development.
“Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in mentoring successors, including the current Premier, ensuring the continuation of Sarawak’s transformation journey while upholding the principles of racial and religious harmony,” he said when contacted by TVS on Wednesday.
In expressing his sadness, Fong, who is a former state attorney-general, recalled how Tun Taib gave him the opportunity to serve in the civil service.
“On a personal level, I have lost a great leader and true friend. Tun Taib offered me the opportunity to serve in the public service and it was an honour and privilege to serve him and the State Government.
“He will be dearly missed by the people of Sarawak,” Fong added.
The late Tun Taib passed away around 4:40 am earlier this morning at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur and is expected to arrive in Kuching this evening.
Meanwhile, the final tribute to the 87-year-old figure will be held at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex from 8 am to 12 noon tomorrow.
Taib’s final resting place will be his family’s cemetery at Demak Jaya.-TVS
