KUCHING, Feb 21: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg hailed the former Governor and Chief Minister of Sarawak, the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud as a pioneer in Malaysia’s Oil & Gas Industry.
Abang Johari acknowledged Tun Taib significant contributions, particularly in helping establish Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) during his tenure as Minister of Prime Industries from 1977 to 1978.
“He was the driving force behind the establishment of Petronas.
“He further solidified the oil industry, which was previously dominated by external entities, enabling local Malaysians to assume positions and contribute to the oil and gas sector,” he told reporters during a press conference at the Kuching International Airport (KIA) here on Wednesday.
Abang Johari also noted Tun Taib’s politics of humanity, as reflected by his fondness of P. Ramlee films.
“Moreover, from a cultural perspective, Tun Taib’s affinity for P. Ramlee’s films, known for their philosophical undertones, is well-known.
“For instance, discussions about the profound messages in P. Ramlee’s “Di Antara Dua Darjat” were commonplace between them, highlighting the importance of providing service that mirrors the essence of humanity,” he added.
Reflecting on Tun Taib’s impact, Abang Johari highlighted how the late leader’s philosophical depth inspired him to pursue a career in politics.
“I owe much of my political education to Tun Taib. Since I entered politics in 1981, when he assumed office as Chief Minister, we navigated challenges together, ultimately achieving remarkable political stability in the state,” he added.
