KUCHING, Feb 19: Former Bukit Mas Member of Parliament, Datuk Mutang Tagal, has been appointed as the 20th Senate president today, becoming the first Orang Ulu to helm the top post.
Mutang, 69, was sworn in at 2:17 PM at Dewan Negara, Kuala Lumpur.
He was nominated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and is the sole nominee for the post.
Mutang succeeded Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who stepped down from the role to become the eighth Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak last month.
Previously, Mutang served for two terms as Bukit Mas MP from 1982 to 1990, before it split into the Limbang and Lawas parliamentary constituencies. – TVS
