KUCHING, Dec 22: Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd is conducting research on plastic waste decomposition using the Pyrolysis technique to tackle landfill issues in the state.
The study, in collaboration with a Singaporean company, is aimed at exploring innovative solutions for managing plastic waste.
“It is a known fact that plastic materials are very hard to dispose of and thus polluting the environment.
“With this collaboration, we hope to manage our plastic waste. We will ship them (plastic waste) to Singapore and they will manage it while we monitor how it is being done,” said Deputy Minister Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni, during the Prize Presentation for the 3K Competition held by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).
Pyrolysis is a technique where plastic materials are decomposed using heat without the presence of oxygen that breaks them into reusable materials including oil, wax and gas.
Additionally, his ministry is currently developing the Waste to Energy (WTE) system to manage waste more efficiently.
Various WTE strategies were drafted and several programmes have been held in Sarawak to turn waste into energy that will benefit the people economically.
At the same time, Hazland revealed that the state government was successful in seizing five large containers of plastic waste that were smuggled illegally to be dumped in Kuching several months ago.
Investigations are currently being undertaken to uncover the mastermind behind the crime. -TVS
