RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 13: Many flocked to the beaches in Brazil’s capital to escape the scorching heat, which reached 50.5 degrees Celsius (°C), marking the highest temperature recorded in Summer 2023.
The previous record temperature for the season in 2023 was 41.8 °C in February, the middle of summer.
While, some sunbathers were delighted with the high temperature, concerns lingered about its long-term impact on the Earth.
Edmundo Filho expressed worry about the weather, emphasizing its potential direct threat to human lives.
“Climate change distresses us; we think every day about what can happen, and a lot of people say that we have already reached the point of no return,” stated the 33-year-old mechanical engineer.
A similar sentiment was shared by a 35-year-old teacher Paula Suquet, who, despite enjoying the heat on the beach, felt sadness about the planet’s worsening condition.
“Yes, it’s worrying. Even though I’m on the beach, enjoying the heat, the part of me that’s concerned about the planet feels sad, knowing that the heat we’re going to experience will get worse and worse,” she said.
The Emergency Management Centre of Climate Change (CGE) in Sao Paulo also reported a record for the year 2023 – an average afternoon temperature of 36.9°C.
This marks the highest-ever recorded temperature for the month of November since CGE started measuring temperatures 19 years ago.
In recent months, Brazil has experienced extreme weather events, including a historic drought in the Amazon and catastrophic rains accompanied by cyclones in the southern part of the country. -TVS
