KUALA LUMPUR, 13 Nov: Tan Sri Datuk Amar Asfia Awang Nasar has been re-appointed as the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker for a ninth term, extending his tenure by two years.
He was sworn in before Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, at his official residence in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Asfia signed his Oath of Office as Sarawak’s DUN Speaker.
His term will span from November 16, 2023, until November 15, 2025, following the conclusion of his eighth term on November 15, 2023.
Among those present at the ceremony were Sarawak Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Professor Dr.Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak Deputy State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker, Dato Idris Buang and Sarawak Attorney-General (AG) Datu Saferi Ali.
Senior Private Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Dato Khir Busrah and other Sarawak State Heads of Department were also present .
Asfia was a Law graduate from Leeds University, England and obtained his Barrister-at-Law from Inner Temple, London.
He served as the Kuala Rajang assemblyman from 1979 until 1983 as well as Serdeng/ Semop assemblyman from 1991 until 2011.
He was appointed as Sarawak Deputy DUN Speaker from 1995 until 2000 before being assuming the Sarawak DUN Speaker position on 15th November 2000. -TVS
