Sarawak’s pursuit of educational brilliance

KUCHING,Nov 2: Possessing autonomy in education allows Sarawak to independently to govern, adapt and tailor its educational approach to meet the specific needs and aspirations of its local population.

Thus, providing the opportunity to foster regional development, enhance the quality of education, and promote economic growth tailored to the unique circumstances of Sarawak.

Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD), Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn stressed that by strategically charting the course of the state’s educational assessment system, numerous possibilities, marking a significant achievement for its education landscape and its pursuit of economic development.

“Sarawak is prioritising Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) education to cater to students with technical skills, aligning with the state’s focus on a green economy and future investment opportunities.

“Hence we are requesting for more autonomy in the state’s education, and with our on expense, we can deliver what’s best for Sarawakians, “ he said this when met by reporters after a press conference of the Premier’s English and Bahasa Melayu debate Challenge for Secondary Schools and Institutes of Higher Learning in Sarawak 2023 held at Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) tower on Thursday.

Commenting further, when asked on the progress of Sarawak’s assessment system, Sagah mentioned that his Ministry is currently in the initial stages of development. This is a vital component of their overarching strategy to enhance and prevent the assessment system from becoming stagnant.

“We are having the sample of the assessment system ready, but we also need feedback from all relevant parties.

“They may have new ideas to further improve the proposed assessment system, with the consultation of the Sarawak Education Department,” he added.

Sagah further stressed the state’s actions won’t conflict with its federal counterparts, instead they aim to synergize and enhance the state’s education system, working in collaboration rather than competition.

“We are not competing with them, we are complementing them,” he noted. -TVS
