KOTA SAMARAHAN, 31 Oct: Sarawak has its sights to implement its own education assessment system, in its move at enhancing quality education in the state.
Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD), Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn amplified that with the state’s own student performance measurement, it would be crucial in assessing potentials and strengths of students.
“For us in Sarawak will have to work something out to have our own assesment system, as we believe this is the only way for us to know the ability and performance of our students.
“It plays a major role when it comes to streaming of students towards Science and Arts Stream, otherwise you will have students going to school and not knowing what their potentials are,” Sagah said this when met by reporters after officiating the opening of the International Conference on Education Research and Innovation (ICERI) 2023 in Kota Samarahan on Tuesday.
He said this in response to a statement made by Federal Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek who commented that the Education Ministry is firm in its stance on not reviving the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) despite calls, especially from parents, for it to be reinstated as a benchmark for their children’s achievement at the primary school level.
“Let the federal government sustain their policies, as far as the national level is concerned, but we want to have our own,” he added.
Currently, the Education Ministry is currently focusing on the 2027 School Curriculum Implementation Survey to develop the new school curriculum to ensure a brighter future in education. -TVS
