Preserving culture and heritage a shared responsibility

KUCHING, Oct 18: Higher learning institutions play a pivotal role in amplifying the vision and shaping attitudes towards cultural diversity.

According to Deputy Minister for Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Datuk Snowdan Lawan, this can be exemplified by Swinburne Sarawak’s dedication, showcased by its inaugural “Good Design Week 2023”, in efforts to safeguard cultural heritage.

“Higher learning institutions not only contribute to the intellectual and social enrichment, but also fostering appreciation to safeguard cultural heritage.

“GDE 2023 can be seen as a space where co-creation between institutions of higher learning, artists, communities and stakeholders, fostering a sense of diversity in arts and culture. Beyond this event, it will create this ripple effect by sparking future generations to also appreciate culture as a whole,” said Snowdan in his speech during the launching of Swinburne’s “Good Design Week 2023” held at the campus’ Lecture Hall on Wednesday.

He further stressed the importance of having open and ongoing collaboration between the government and institutions in bridging the gap and identifying opportunities in the creative industry.

“We need to unpack the challenges and identify opportunities for cultural entrepreneurship among the communities,” Snowdan added.

Meanwhile, Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Pro-Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Professor Lau Hieng Ho echoed that through the initiatives, activities held during the event serve as an inspiration to foster an environment of learning, sharing and celebration of culture as a whole.

“Through the event we hope to see more collaboration as part of our efforts to preserve our cultural heritage, this week, we assemble local and regional researchers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, the creative community, and government representatives as a testament to our cultural legacy,” he noted.

Themed, “Culture, Preservation and Governance”, GDE 2023 an initiative by Swinburne Sarawak’s School of Design and Arts held from 18th October to 20th October, at the campus and Imperial Hotel Kuching as a platform for students, academics and creative industries communities to share their best practices in preserving arts, culture and heritage. -TVS
