KUCHING, Aug 4: Sri Aman and Miri hospitals have been chosen as the designated venues for the groundbreaking Global Surgery Initiative (GSI).

The initiative serves as an impactful collaboration between the public and private sectors, as well as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) endeavour.

Sarawak’s Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, revealed that Hospital Sri Aman achieved 37 successful surgeries, while Hospital Miri completed 31 surgeries with positive outcomes.

He added on March 12th to 19th, 2023, the MSA/CoA, together with doctors from Subang Jaya Medical Centre, joined hands for the Global Surgery Initiative, a first-of-its-kind Public-Private Partnership and corporate social relations initiative that aims to provide access to safe and affordable surgical and anesthesia care in underserved areas in Malaysia.

“The chosen hospital was Sri Aman Hospital in Sarawak, and this was considered one of the first few CSR projects locally where surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other allied healthcare professionals from the private sector joined forces to work together with the public health system to identify district hospitals where the need for surgical services has not been completely met.

“A total of 37 patients were successfully operated on, making the GSI at Hospital Sri Aman a success.

“Additionally, another Global surgery was carried out in Hospital Miri from 24th to 28th July 2023, where a total of 31 surgeries were successfully performed,” he pointed out.

Abang Johari said this during his speech at the officiating ceremony of the Malaysian Society of Anaesthesiologists and College of Anaesthesiologists, Academy of Medicine, Malaysia Annual Scientific Congress 2023, here on Friday.

Meanwhile, he expressed his gratitude to all involved during the operation.

The congress is being held for the first time in Sarawak from 4th to 6th August at the Borneo Convention Centre (BCCK) Kuching. – TVS
