Miri to roll out the ‘Red Carpet’ for Asia Pacific Film Festival 2024

KUCHING, August 4: Miri has been bestowed with the prestigious honour of hosting the Asia Pacific Film Festival (APFF) in 2024.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts of Sarawak Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said it is a remarkable achievement for Miri but also a crucial step in promoting the film industry within the local community.

He also highlighted the event as a gateway to new possibilities in the creative industry, aligning perfectly with Sarawak’s vision for progress and development.

“We are looking forward to the next APFF in Miri. This is one of the ways we are giving our local people an opportunity to do business in the film industry.

“It is a new avenue within the creative industry. It aligns with our goals for Sarawak’s progress and development,” said Abdul Karim whose text speech was read by Deputy Minister Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts II (Creative Industry and Performing Arts) Datuk Snowdan Lawan at the launching ceremony of the ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards 2023.

Abdul Karim reiterated the importance of this festival for Sarawak’s overall growth, particularly in tandem with the digital economy. As the festival is anticipated to foster collaborations and empower local talents, thereby contributing to the burgeoning creative sector in the region.

Further adding to the excitement, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts I (Tourism) Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, expressed his delight that his hometown, Miri, has been chosen as the venue for the APFF.

“As a Mirian, I am thrilled to hear the announcement of Miri, hosting the Asia Pacific Film Festival 2024.

“This is another industry we must actively develop, and I extend my gratitude to our Minister and the industry stakeholders responsible for bringing this prestigious festival to our city,” he noted.

The selection of Miri as the host city for the APFF reflects Sarawak’s growing prominence in the global film landscape and presents a valuable opportunity to showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage. The anticipation builds as the festival promises to be a momentous celebration of creativity, artistry, and cinematic excellence. – TVS
