SIMUNJAN, July 31: A body was discovered, believed to be one of the four crew members of the capsized MV Tung Sung was recovered at 2.15pm earlier today.
Simunjan’s Police Chief, OCPD DSP Wong Tee Kue said the Search and Rescue (SAR) team found the body approximately eight nautical miles from the Sarawak Rivers Board, Sebuyau Jetty.
“The body was discovered on the 12th day of the SAR operation and we are trying to verify whether it is the crew of the sunken vessel.
“The body has been sent to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for DNA testing and further identification verification,” said Wong.
Recovery efforts of the capsized MV Tung Sung that sank near Pulau Burung on July 19th is currently being undertaken.
“We have six feet of water to pump out from the vessel.
“Once its (water) fully pumped out, the search for the remaining three victims will resume,” he added.
The SAR operation involves a total force of 82 individuals from various agencies including the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), the Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM), marine police, Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), Sarawak Coast Guard and the Civil Defence Force. – TVS
